Epidemic is a Rapid Spread of infectious disease in a community at a particular time
Pandemic is a global epidemic
Endemic is the “stable presence of a disease” within a set area. For COVID-19 Endemicity to happen, the virus continues to circulate, but infection rates, hospitalizations and deaths numbers stabilize and do not increase unexpectedly, exhausting the healthcare system.
World Health Organisation (WHO) warned against treating the virus as endemic now with the spike in infections driven by the Omicron variant and advised countries to consider Covid endemic based on the levels of immunity. As of 2 Feb 2022 just 12% had received at least one dose of vaccine in low-income nations. The acute phase of the pandemic cannot be ended unless we close this gap in vaccination rates.
Countries like Denmark, Mexico, Costa Rica, the UK, Norway, etc. have already opened their borders to international tourists/ travellers to enter without quarantine (wego.com). As part of the “Transitioning to Endemicity” phase, the government of Malaysia has decided to reopen the country’s borders from April 1. This is a temporary stage before the country moves to the Endemic Phase, a decision to be made by the WHO.
Travellers who have been fully vaccinated are no longer required to undergo quarantine. They are only required to perform a RT-PCR test two days prior to departure and an RTK antigen test within 24 hours upon arrival in Malaysia.
