E-wallet is a payment system on a smartphone app that is used for cashless transactions such as paying for your groceries, restaurant dining, parking, bill, petrol, etc. Except for e-wallet that is linked to your bank account such as MAE, you have to first load your e-wallet with money via credit/ debit card or online banking transfer/ DuitNow. The most commonly used e-wallet apps are Touch ‘n Go, GrabPay, Boost, Maybank E-Wallet (MAE), favePAY.
Here are the biggest players and what are the benefits of using their eWallet Apps:
Touch ‘n Go eWallet
There are 410,000 Touch ’n Go (TnG) eWallet merchants across Malaysia (Source: touchngo.com.my). Check out their merchant listing here. The benefits of installing the Touch ‘n Go eWallet app are that users can also pay for on-street car parking (under municipality of each area), as well as other functions such as Toll, Insurance, Prepaid, Bills, CTOS Report, finance (investment, loan), etc.
Pros
TnG eWallet is the most widely used e-wallet in Malaysia, well-accepted by many merchants. No-fuss, easy to use interface, transaction gets through in a breeze compared to other eWallets which have issues like the merchant not receiving the payment though it shows in your screen that payment has been made.
Cons
New users can be confused with the usage of the eWallet and physical TnG card. The eWallet cannot be used for public transport, but can be used to link up the card or RFID tag for paying the toll.
